10th NASS: 63 Opposition Members-Elect Approves Abass, Kalu

Sixty-three new members of Nigeria's 10th House of Representatives, all from opposition parties, have openly endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) nominees for Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu, respectively.

During a news conference in Abuja, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) spokesperson, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who is also a recently elected representative, relayed this endorsement.

He urged other speaker candidates who relied on opposition votes to withdraw from the race, as their support had already been committed to Abbas and Kalu.

Ugochinyere said,

“Our common goal now should be beyond party and partisan politics and totally focused on Nigeria and her greater good. We want the best and we have selected the best and importantly, the selection is by merit.”

Speaking on behalf of the 63 newly-elected members, he revealed their transformation into the TBK Group, with all 63 votes cast for Abbas: "In the coming days, Nigerians will learn the identity of the TBK Group and also feel our influence."

He vouched for Abbas' suitability for the position of Speaker, complimenting his education, experience, resourcefulness, and honesty, and noting that Abbas had proposed 43 bills in the 8th Assembly and 74 bills in the 9th Assembly, making him the lawmaker with the most bills.

“21 of those bills have been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari,”Ugochinyere added.

Amobi Ogah, a Labour Party member-elect, also endorsed Abbas and Kalu, characterizing them as capable and competent.

He expressed optimism for the uniqueness of the 10th Assembly if both candidates were elected.

Igah encouraged, “I beg my colleagues to support the duo in the interest of National unity.”

This announcement was made prior to the June 13 inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, where new Senate and House officers will be elected or confirmed.

It also follows the APC's publication of the leadership zoning formula for the tenth National Assembly, which led to the formation of a group of dissatisfied speaker candidates.

In conclusion, the support of the Minority Parties Forum and the Joint Task – 10th Assembly coalition has strengthened endorsement for the APC nominees.

The upcoming inauguration will disclose whether or not these alliances have succeeded in uniting behind Abbas and Kalu.
