Presidential Poll: APC planning re-run—LP

Abuja — Following reports that the All Progressives Congress, APC, was planning for a 2023 presidential election rerun, Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure advised party members to stay vigilant.

He added that the governing party knew the legal challenge to INEC's presidential election results was stacked against it.

Abure revealed this during an online meeting with Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy, chaired by Professor Eddie Oparaoji, the Labour Party Diaspora Chairman in the US, in Abuja yesterday.

"On the alert and get ready to further humiliate APC and its government in the polls if their sinister plot fails to materialize," Abure told the party's approximately 10 million members, according to Obiora Ifoh, the acting national publicity secretary.

He said: “Rumours have it that those in government are already planning for rerun and this is one of the support we will be canvassing from you.

Since the administration is preparing for a repeat, we should too.

“So, we will need your engagement and support on this aspect if par adventure it happens today, that the election is nullified which is not what we are asking for because we are asking for an outright declaration of Peter Obi as the President of Nigeria.

Given the numbers and results, we predict Peter Obi to be declared president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. If that doesn't happen, we should prepare for a rerun election as the administration is expected to do so.

“Having said this by the way, I must say clearly that we have put all our evidence before the court and are very hopeful that the tribunal will act in our favor.

We hope the Supreme Court will rule in our favor if the issue goes to it. We're optimistic.

“In nine months we are able to change the political narratives of this country and we must build on that successes to have a more formidable party that we can strategically position for the downtrodden people of Nigeria.”

Ambassador Oseloka Obaze, Director of ObiDatti Presidential Campaign, urged diaspora members to see the struggle for the party's mandate as a collective responsibility that no one could abandon for any other reason.

"Great countries are built by their citizens, and I think we have enormous human capital in the diaspora," he remarked. Harvest them, bring them home, and make Nigeria great.

The effort to reform our nation is a long-term process. How long it will endure, we don't know, but I think what we serve best is to remain focused on our respective sectors; you in diaspora do what you can to assist us, we in the trenches will keep the ground.”

Professor Oparaoji, chairman of the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy, said in his speech, "Fostering a purposeful diaspora partnership for a new Nigeria," that the group, in partnership with all Obidients, could significantly contribute to Nigeria's development.

Advocacy, human rights promotion, capacity building, investment, education and healthcare support, diaspora participation, and policy advocacy may help Nigeria achieve democratic government, justice, and socio-economic advancement.

He stated, “With our diverse network and resources, our diaspora community can be a catalyst for positive change and contribute to Nigeria’s long-term development goal of powering up that new Nigeria of our dream.
