Recall that the All Progressive Congress (APC) designated the position of senate president to the south-south region by appointing Akpabio, but it was met with internal opposition.

At its inauguration on Tuesday, the upper chamber of the assembly elected its leaders. Akpabio, from the South-South, and Abdul'Aziz Yari, from the North-West, were nominated for the position.
Nonetheless, the Daily Post reveals that a public record of the Senators' votes reveals that some Senators from Akpabio's geopolitical zone voted against him.
The document revealed that they voted for Yari, a native of the North-West, but Akpabio won the election with 63 votes to Senator Yari's 46.
Two senators from Bayelsa State, three senators from Delta State, and one senator from Edo State voted against Akpabio, according to the public record.

All senators from Delta State voted against Akpabio, including Senators Nwoko Ned, Dafinone Omueya, and Joel Onowakpo.
While Bayelsa Senators Benson Friday and Dickson Seriake, who voted against Akpabio, voted for Yari, Okpebolo Monday, who represents the Edo Central Senatorial District, also voted against Akpabio.

Akpabio succeeded Ahmad Lawan, who presided over the 9th Senate, and was supported by Ovie Omo-Agege as Vice President.
