Criteria for Acceptance into the Herchel Smith Scholarship Program for Graduate Study in Intellectual Property

To qualify for the Intellectual Property PhD – Herchel Smith Scholarships, candidates need to demonstrate that they meet all of the following criteria:

  • The mandatory language is English. (You'll need to take the IELTS as well as other exams)
  • All countries around the world are considered eligible.
  • This award is reserved for first-time applicants who intend to begin their studies in September 2022, the beginning of the next academic year.
  • A PhD student in intellectual property law or someone working at the intersection of intellectual property law and other fields of the sciences and the humanities is required to apply for this fellowship(IELTS: overall score of 7.0, with a score of 7.0 in Writing and scores of 5.5 in Reading, Listening, and Speaking.) TOEFL score of 100, with 27 on the Writing section, 18 on the Reading section, 17 on the Listening section, and 20 on the Speaking section. In addition, we will consider results from other tests.

How to Apply for Scholarships to Pursue a PhD in Intellectual Property through the Herchel Smith Program

The following items are needed to complete the application.

  • Any further documentation that pertains to this qualification is welcome (e.g. translations, reverse of transcript) a maximum of five uploads are allowed.
  • A photocopy of the actual certificate and/or transcript you were awarded
  • Clearly demonstrate your command of the English language.
  • If you are a member of any professional organizations (such as the GMC or the Bar, for example), please include the name of the organization and your registration number (where applicable)
  • A curriculum vitae, more commonly known as a CV or résumé, is a condensed version of your work and education history.
  • A concise personal statement (no more than 1,000 words) that: explains why you are interested in this particular field Describes any previous research experience that may be relevant, such as doing it as part of an earlier degree program. Include a list of any scholarly work that you have already published or that is currently being prepared for publication.
  • Evidence of sponsorship or a scholarship.
  • Annotations in the research proposal will include information on the following: Have you previously gotten in touch with the supervisor or supervisors; Title of the suggested project; Title of the Studentship; Name of the Research Group; When would you like to get started with the project?

The following are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Please be aware that unlike other PhD programs at QMUL, the School of Law does not require applicants to contact an academic staff member to arrange supervision before submitting their full application. The Research Admissions Director first reviews all applicants.

  • When an application is strong enough, it is always assessed by an academic with research experience related to the applicant's planned area of study, as the Director has an overview of the supervisory capacities and availability of all academic staff.
  • While this is not required in the College's On-line application system, it is required in the 'Research Proposal' portion of the application form.
  • To avoid having to specify a specific member of staff, candidates might simply refer to their supervisor as "a School of Law supervisor" (although they are free to do so if they wish).
